When Dr. Aisha Siddiqui saw immigrant and refugee families in Houston’s Gulfton area struggling to find their place, she created Culture of Health – Advancing Together (CHAT) in 2015. She believed that health means more than just medicine – it means feeling welcome, connected, and proud of your culture. In 2023, CHAT joined Mid-America Arts Alliance to bring their community-centered approach to even more families.
Art becomes a bridge between cultures at CHAT, where over 20 colorful murals tell community stories through the Gulfton Story Trail. Families discover their voices through music, photography, and traditional arts classes that honor where they come from while building new skills. Children in grades K-12 find support through CHAT Academy, Girls’ Club, and summer camps that teach them how to understand their feelings and build friendships that cross cultural lines.
Community health workers speak multiple languages and understand what it feels like to navigate American healthcare systems while keeping cultural traditions strong. They connect families to doctors and health services throughout Houston, lead health education meetings, and organize fall festivals where different cultures come together to celebrate. Through partnerships with local schools and organizations, CHAT creates welcoming spaces where every family’s story matters and where belonging grows through shared experiences of art, learning, and community support.
