When Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Houston needed a voice in 1979, community members came together to create OCA-Greater Houston. They believed that their stories, experiences, and dreams deserved to be heard in the places where important decisions get made. For over 45 years, this vision has guided their work to build stronger communities across the Houston area.
Volunteers are the heart of OCA-Greater Houston because they understand what it feels like to balance cultural heritage with American dreams, and they use that knowledge to support families from many different Asian American and Pacific Islander backgrounds. Whether someone is young and just starting their career, a working parent, or a senior with decades of wisdom to share, OCA-Greater Houston creates spaces where their voice matters.
Democracy works best when everyone can participate, and OCA-Greater Houston helps community members find their place in American civic life while celebrating their cultural roots. Through citizenship support, voter education, and leadership training, they ensure people have the tools they need to shape their communities. Their Houston Asian American and Pacific Islander Film Festival, mentorship programs, and economic workshops create connections that go beyond services – they build a network where community members see themselves reflected in business leaders, elected officials, and community advocates who understand their journey.
